Bus company suspends Kabayan operation

THE operator of the Norton bus that figured in an accident in Kabayan, Benguet last January 31 Saturday clarified the suspension of their operations is a personal decision and not due to the Provincial Board's proposed inquiry.

Anthony Mendoza, owner of the Kabayan-bound Norton bus that fell into a ravine, claiming eight lives and injuring 22 others, said he was the one who asked the regional Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) for a one-week suspension in their operations.

He also clarified it was not the legislative body who suspended their operations. "It was not the board's request for an investigation that prompted me to ask for suspension. I decided to cease our operations to give time to my personnel, who devoted their time attending to the victims, time to rest for everybody's safety. The board does not have knowledge of this."

Mendoza added they have to perform a ritual as practiced when untoward incidents, happened.

He told the board their Kabayan operations will resume either Sunday or Monday next week.

The board asked Mendoza to attend their meeting Saturday to thresh out issues that were seen to create discord between the two parties.

Board Member Juan Nazarro, who authored the resolution requesting for further investigations into the accident, explained it was not made for the purpose of pinning down the company.

"I have no bad intentions in requesting for an inquiry. My purpose was to have this matter thoroughly investigated so we will not be left hanging," Nazarro explained during the meeting.

Board Member Liso Agpas shared Nazarro's contention, adding that whenever the Board requests for an investigation, it is made in aid of legislation - for them to have basis in passing legislative measures deemed proper to help solve problems or avoid similar occurrences. "What we are doing is in aid of legislation. Inquiries leading to prosecution are beyond our concern." (JC)
