Panagbenga festival at SM Baguio
CELEBRATE the season of blossoming at SM City Baguio with music, dancing, parades, and performances by some of the country's top artists.
Initially known as the Baguio Flower Festival, lawyer Damaso Bangaoet Jr. thought up the flower festival in 1995. Its official logo, a spray of sunflowers, was chosen from entries to the annual Camp John Hay art contest.
It was in 1996 when archivist and curator Ike Picpican suggested the local name Panagbenga, a Kankanaey term meaning "a season of blossoming, a time for flowering." The festival is a tribute to the beautiful flowers the city has been known for, as well as a celebration of its comeback after the earthquake that devastated the city in 1990.
Held every year, the festival highlights floats abloom with flowers ala Pasadena's famous Rose Parade; street dancing with an ethnic touch; market encounters; and other activities. The highlands' ethnic culture is showcased in the festivities - in the Cordillera region - inspired costumes of the street dancers; and in the popular Bendian, an Ibaloi dance celebration.
The community spirit has become the heart of the festival every year, and being a part of the city life, SM City Baguio has made it a tradition to join in the spirit of celebration.
There is definitely a lot to celebrate as SM City Baguio shoppers can enjoy up to 50 percent discount on selected items in the mall's Panagbenga Special from February 24 to 26.
Capping a day that begins with a street dancing and float parade that will take off at Session Road on February 25 and 26 at 8 a.m. at SM ground and proceed to the Melvin Jones Football ground, SM City Baguio will be the venue for the K-Lite in Bloom Street Party with Cycle Mind. This fun street party will be held at the mall's Central Park.
Get to see the stars of Pinoy Big Brother live at SM City Baguio's Central Park at 1 p.m. Saturday.
More top notch entertainment: Randy Santiago's Album Tour at 5 p.m. Saturday, the spellbinding Baguio Kadabra Magic Show with Boy Samson on March 1, and the Miss Teen Philippines pre-qualification search on March 5. Flower power comes forth with the Flower up Your Jeans competition on March 5 and Baguio's Biggest Bounty on March 8. All the exciting events will take place at the mall's Entertainment Plaza.
Not to be missed is the Panagbenga closing ceremony organized by the Baguio Flower Festival Foundation on March 5. A Spectacular fireworks display will light up the city's skies later on the evening.
Celebrate the Panagbenga Festival at SM City Baguio!
