2 days off mulled for Bokawkan-bound jeeps By Jane Cadalig
EVEN the Bokawkan-bound La Trinidad jeepneys associations would be asked to implement a two days off if the number of units plying the route would be found excessive enough to cause traffic congestion.
A survey will be conducted to determine the actual number of La Trinidad jeepney units loading and unloading below the City Hall of Baguio for the jeepney federation to decide whether or not to emulate what is being done to the Magsaysay group.
"Bokawkan (jeepney units) is under observation. We would be implementing a survey to prove if the units plying the area are really minimal," La Trinidad Jeepney Trunkline officer Valentino Walang said.
Walang said there had been manifestations to include La Trinidad jeepneys bound for Bokawkan in the implementation of the two days off for their members, but the Bokawkan group requested for exemption as the units plying the route are minimal.
The Magsaysay-bound La Trinidad jeepneys association adopted the two days off starting February 20 to lessen the number of units entering the area.
The move is one of the measures the association has undertaken to minimize the traffic buildup along Magsaysay Avenue and to convince the City Government not to relocate their staging area to the Slaughter compound. Heavy traffic along the area has been attributed to the La Trinidad jeepneys' operations.
But Chief Inspector Samuel Bumangil, chief of the Baguio City Police Office-Traffic Management Branch (BCPO-TMB), said no change has been observed since the implementation of the scheme.
Bumangil said vehicle clogging is still experienced along the area because the drivers remain defiant of the pick-and-go policy imposed on them.
The TMB, which recommended the transfer of La Trinidad jeeps staging area from the Tabora Park to the slaughter compound, is awaiting the final decision of the City Council.
