Ifugao is free from foot disease: vet office
LAGAWE, Ifugao -- The Provincial Veterinary Office (PVO) declared on Saturday that Ifugao is free from foot and mouth disease (FMD).
PVO Chief Roland Pila said there had been no case of FMD in the province since 1999.
FMD is a highly contagious viral disease affecting cloven-hoofed animals like cattle, carabao, swine and sometimes sheep and goat. The disease is characterized by vesicle formation in the mouth, tongue, teats and hooves. The disease does not affect humans.
Animals infected with FMD are condemned and disposed properly, Pila said. He said FMD-infected areas were also barred from entering the province at the quarantine checkpoint in the towns of Sta. Fe and Solano in Nueva Vizcaya.
The PVO is conducting random blood sampling submitted to the Department of Agriculture (DA) Central Office for examination. It is also required to submit monthly FMD monitoring report.
FMD, although not a killer disease, is a crippling malady that reduces production and put to waste precious meat and milk of infected animals as well as the investment of animal raisers, producing wide-ranging effect in the country's economy.
