17 stallholders defy voluntary demolition By Jane Cadalig
HOLDERS of the 17 extension stalls at the former public market building in La Trinidad failed to fulfill their pledge to voluntarily demolish their units before the end of February.
Instead, they asked the Municipal Government to extend anew their stay at the extension stalls.
In a letter to the Municipal Council, the 17 stallholders said they could not yet demolish their units because the booths they are supposed to occupy at the new public market building are not yet completed.
The extension holders earlier agreed to destroy their stalls on a voluntary basis. They have been asked by the Municipal Government to leave the area since last year.
Mayor Nestor Fongwan said he will grant the request in the meantime while the Municipal Government is still completing the stalls at the three-storey market facility.
"We will favor their request in the meantime because we still have to finish the stalls that they will be occupying. But the extension will not go beyond March," he added.
Fongwan was authorized by the Municipal Council to order the demolition of the extension stalls last year but the holders appealed for reconsideration.
The Municipal Council granted the request and moved for the accommodation of the booth holders at the new public market building.
The mayor however said the stall owners will be occupying either the second or third floor of the facility because the first level is allotted to the regular booth holders at the former public market building.
