10 expectant moms to vie for 'Mrs. Buntis' title

RAMON Nonato, the 11th century Spanish saint, must be smiling up there as 10 expectant mothers walk the ramp on March 10 as finalists in the search for Mrs. Buntis at the CAP Building, Post Office Loop to mark National Pregnancy Day.

A project of the Philippine Obstetrical and Gynecological Society (Pogs), the regional tilt coincides with the feast of San Ramon, the patron saint of pregnant women, and is in keeping with the mandate of Presidential Decree (PD) 569 for the celebration of safe pregnancy and the miracle of birth.

The contest will cap a congress among pregnant women focusing on pre-natal care, free consultation and laboratory tests, games, giveaways, aside from snacks and lunch for delegates from Abra, Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, La Union, Pangasinan, Mountain Province, Baguio City and Benguet that comprise Pogs Region 1.

Pogs Region 1 director Betha Fe Castillo and chapter president Aurora Valdez designated Alice Savador as overall coordinator of the observance.

The 10 finalists were selected in the pre-screening last Saturday at Dr. Salvador's Clinic at Rm. 302 of the Peliz Loy Centrum along Session Road.

Candidates must be married and are required to bring their marriage certificates, 22 to 32 years old, with no more than three previous living children, and must prepare a short presentation during the talent portion.

Hopefuls must also be at least five months pregnant and holders of pre-natal cards or booklets from their rural health units or ob-gyne clinics.

Dr. Mary Lu Magno, chairperson of the all-women panel of judges, said judging will be based on audience impact, talent, "buntis" health knowledge, overall "buntis" wellness, personality and poise.

With her in the board are doctors Humbeline Galut, Edith Flores, Josefina Francisco and Evalinda Guevarra.

The winner will bring home a trophy, sash and gift pack from Biofemme and P1,000 gift certificate from Pogs Region 1 while the runner will get a medal, sash and gift pack and P800 worth of gift certificate.

"Buntis Bida Ka, Gabay at Tangalaw sa Kinabukasan" is this year's theme. (RD)
