Mayor to seek reelection next year

EVEN with reports of his impending recall or suspension from office, Baguio City Mayor Braulio Yaranon has manifested intention to ask for reelection next year.

At 77, Yaranon said if his health would permit, he would try his luck once more. He is the country's eldest elected mayor.

What’s your opinion on Arroyo’s emergency rule? Post comment.

His plan is also notwithstanding allegations hounding his administration since he assumed position, including rumors that members of his family have been greatly involved in "managing" the affairs of the City Government.

In his latest medical check-up, the mayor said his blood pressure, cholesterol and sugar levels were all within the normal range. He said his good health could be attributed to regular exercise and a strict diet.

Yaranon earlier said he never intended to run for mayor, opting only to seek re-election for councilor. He was then former mayor Bernardo Vergara's leading critic at the City Council.

It was at the height of the casino controversy when Yaranon, upon the prodding of several groups, decided to run against Vergara and won by a wide margin during the May 2004 synchronized elections.

But since assuming the city's top post in July 2004, controversies began hounding Yaranon's administration from jueteng payoffs, fall out with his party mates in the Kilusan Kontra Katiwalian (KKK), misunderstanding with department heads and barangay chairpersons, appointments of consultants who were alleged to have entered into questionable transactions, failure to deliver basic services to the constituency and appointment of an aide who allegedly assumed the mayor's functions.

The allegations however were denied by the city chief executive who said his campaign calling for good governance were strictly imposed on all employees and transactions at the City Hall.

Yaranon said his style of governance brought down government expenditure albeit the lesser infrastructure developments undertaken in his two years as mayor. (RO)
