Plan to restore 30% amusement tax pushed
By Ernie N. Olson Jr.

COUNCILOR Leandro Yangot Jr. said Sunday he wants to bring back the amusement tax being collected from gross receipts of admissions from proprietors, lessees, promoters or operators of theatres, cinemas, concerts, concert halls, circuses and other places of amusement in Baguio City from 15 to 30 percent.

Yangot said the return of amusement tax is necessary because the recent passage of Tax Ordinance 2005-01 resulted in the reduction of the 30 percent amusement tax from gross receipts to only 15 percent. The reduction reportedly deterred the City Government from increasing its annual budget.

"During the budget deliberation for 2006, the City Treasurer's Office appealed to the City Council for us to restore the original provisions of Chapter 2, Section 9 of Tax Ordinance 2000-001 because the (subsequent) passage of Tax Ordinance 2005-01 resulted in the reduction of the 30 percent amusement tax to 15 percent of gross receipts from admission fees," he added.

"This reduction has deterred the City Government from increasing its annual budget. If the City Government intends to satisfactorily meet its goals and targets, it must have enough financial resources to run its operations, hence, this proposal," he said.

In the case of sports activities, Yangot proposed the rate of tax to be collected from promoters and similar operators should only be pegged at five percent.
