11 cops sued for rights violation
A LAWYERS' group Free Legal Assistance Group has filed criminal charges against the 11 policemen who arrested the 11 punks on allegations that they burned a detachment of the Citizen's Armed Forces Geographical Unit (Cafgu) in Mankayan, Benguet last February 10.
Among the policemen charged with violation of Republic Act (RA) 7438 or the law that defines the rights of persons arrested, detained or under custodial investigation before the Provincial Prosecutor's Office were Superintendent Brent Madjaco; Senior Inspector Joseph Paulo Bayangasan; Senior Police Officer 1 Alyson Kalang-ad; and Police Officer 2s Jonathan Pucya, Wendell Baglao and James Ayan Jr.
The lawyers' group represented by Pablito Sanidad and Noe Villanueva accused the police officers of failing to inform their clients of their rights, including the need for a lawyer's presence to assist them during interrogation.
Also, Sanidad complained that the policemen forced their clients to admit that they are members of the New People's Army (NPA) and ordered them to burn down a Cafgu detachment.
He said additional charges would be filed against the arresting officers, notwithstanding the motion to quash earlier filed.
Judge Agapito Laoagan of the Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 62 rescheduled the hearing on the motion to quash on April 6.
At the Senate, Senator Aquilino Pimentel also reportedly filed a proposed resolution seeking an investigation on the alleged abuses committed by the local police. (RO)
