Barangay Shilan pushes to legalize chicken manure trade
OFFICIALS of Barangay Shilan, La Trinidad are pushing for the legalization of chicken dung trade in the barangay.
In a resolution, Shilan officials asked the Municipal Council to amend Municipal Ordinance 01-1990, a local measure on the abatement of nuisance, to finally allow the sale of chicken dung in the town. The resolution was accompanied by a petition from residents who are in favor of the trade.
They said allowing the sale of chicken dung would not only enhance the economic status of the barangay but would also help farmers who utilize the by-product as fertilizers in their farms.
The Municipal Government considers chicken dung trade as a nuisance in the town because of the foul smell that is emitted by the chicken waste. The provision in the ordinance declaring the undertaking as a nuisance was earlier upheld by the court.
But despite the ruling, several requests usually from farmers' groups have been submitted to the Municipal Government to allow chicken dung dealers to conduct business in the town, particularly along Halsema Highway that traverses Barangay Shilan.
The town temporarily allowed the trade early this year to gather feedbacks from affected residents. (JC)
