'Kampus bayani' trust fund drive ongoing

THE Philippine Mental Health Association (PMHA) Baguio-Benguet has put up a "kampus bayani" trust fund that hopes to generate money for the educational assistance of the kampus bayani students through the support and help of other individuals and agencies that believe in the cause.

Dubbed "Heart's Dream" (the making of heroes and heroines), the trust fund represents the hopes and visions of the underprivileged students who have managed to cope with their lives amidst their economic situations. For the sterling qualities they possess, they are called the campus heroes and heroines or the "kampus bayani".

Congratulations to the graduates of 2006! Post your graduation experiences and greetings here.

Believing in the dreams of these students, the PMHA Baguio-Benguet launched the "kampus bayani" project in 2001. Its purpose was to look for modern day heroes and heroines and use them as models for the youth. The second purpose was to help them attain their "heart's dream" of getting a college education in fulfilling their dreams in life.

To date, 177 high school students have been recognized as heroes and heroines during the search for the "kampus bayani" since 2001. These students are self-supporting but also help augment their family income. They worked as laborers, helpers, vendors, washers, baby sitters, tutors and other odd jobs that one can imagine. Despite this reality, these students have not lost sight of their dreams and aspirations.

Of the 177, only 16 have been given college scholarships.

The PMHA attempts to institutionalize the scholarship program of the "kampus bayani" through the trust fund that will extend the college scholarship to other financial aid that these hardworking youth must cope with. They need money for other school needs or even the money for transportation that is not budgeted in the daily earnings.

The association believed that everyone has a "heart's dream" and knows how to share it. With your precious peso, more deserving young boys and girls will also be able to make their "heart's dream" of an education comes true.

Interested individuals or groups may obtain pledge forms for the trust fund at the PMHA BBC office, corner BGH Exit Road, Marcos Highway, Baguio City or call telefax 442-2337.
