Legal aid for detained Cordi miners in Saudi sought
BAGUIO City Representative Mauricio Domogan has requested the Department of Foreign affairs (DFA) to provide assistance to the 22 miners from the Cordilleras who are detained in Saudi Arabia after being charged with alleged theft of gold.
In his letter to Foreign Affairs Undersecretary Esteban Conegos Jr., Domogan said there is a need for DFA officials to look into the needs of the detained Oversees Filipino Workers (OFWs) so that they would be accorded proper treatment by Saudi authorities.
The identities of the detained miners in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia were withheld by their relatives.
Earlier, relatives of the detained OFWs sought the assistance of Domogan after the miners were arrested one after the other in the last two to three weeks on suspicion of theft of gold at a prestigious mining company in the Saudi Arabia city.
The 22 miners are still detained by company authorities pending the conduct of an investigation on the charges filed against them.
Domogan said the government should provide the workers with legal assistance.
