Let public decide on small town lotto: mayor
BAGUIO City Representative Mauricio Domogan said he encourages the conduct of a public hearing on the possible operation of a small-town lottery (STL) here, so that the opinion of the community can be heard regarding this controversy.
Stressing that although he is personally against gambling and the STL, Domogan explained that the judgment of the community must also be respected.
The Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) has earlier identified several provinces in the country as pilot areas for the conduct of the STL and this is presently being promoted by the government to replace jueteng.
Operating the STL is however subject to the approval of the concerned town, city or municipal mayor.
Mayor Braulio Yaranon earlier vowed that he would not issue a permit in case STL operators decide to conduct business here.
At the City Council, Councilor Galo Weygan filed a proposed resolution, which appealed to concerned authorities not to allow STL franchisees to operate here.
The Baguio Multi-Sectoral Group likewise registered its opposition. The group said that promoting STL as an alternative to jueteng is disregarding the fact that gambling contributes to the collapse of families.
In Benguet, several Provincial Board members and even Governor Borromeo Melchor also opposed the operation of any STL there. Officials of the province said that STL is just a legalized form of jueteng.
