Bayron holds off Dumandan for lead in Samsung tour

JAY BAYRON held off the challenge of a hot Marvin Dumandan and retained a one-point lead halfway into the kick off leg of the 5th Samsung Amateur Golf Tour at the Baguio Country Club golf course.

Bayron shot a three-over 64 for a two-day total of 123, just a stroke off Dumandan and three others, while towing a score of 11 players who survived the cut.

Dumandan survived a three bogey at the difficult par-4 11th hole, en route to one of the two sub-par performances with a one-under 60 for a 124 total, along with Ferdinand Aunzo (62), Dave Hernandez (62) and Paul Echavez (61).

Defending Baguio leg champion Michael Bibat shot a three-over 64 and found himself alone at sixth spot with 125, followed by Joseph Labajo, who matched his first day performance of 63 for a 126.

Jun Bernis, who won the 2004 edition at the nearby Camp John Hay course, fired a leg-high three-under 58 and found himself tied with Labajo with 126, after an opening seven-over 68.

"Well, we played not really well today. But still, it is an open race for all of us," said Bibat in the vernacular after the round.

"If there’s anybody hot, it is Dumandan and Bernis," said Bayron.

Edwin Gamayo closed with a 74 and took a two-stroke victory in Class C competition in the men’s side, while Pepe Mendoza shot a 72 and took runner-up honors.

Mine consultant Danny Galang fired a closing round 79 en route to a 167 and took a one-point victory over Albert Tualla in Class D.

Teener Kim Ji-eun had a 71 for a 152 total, to win Class A honors in the female side, beating fellow Korean Park Ji-sun.

Sonia Bruce closed with a 74 for 149 points and edged Charlita Diciano, whose three-points deficit on day two was the same winning margin the former had for Class B honors.

Anne Philips overtook Nora Sy to win by a point in Class C. Phillips closed with an 82 for 176, while Sy had an 86 for a 177 total.
