Lawyer jailed for illegal recruit, estafa raps
By Ernie N. Olson Jr.

A LAWYER, who was earlier detained at the Pasig City Jail for estafa, was transferred to the Baguio City Jail last week after two charges of large-scale illegal recruitment and 39 other charges of estafa were filed against him.

Although a P1,146,000 bail was recommended for his provisional liberty in the estafa cases, he would not be able to get out of prison until all of the charges have been dismissed, since no bail was allowed in the two large-scale illegal recruitment cases he is also facing.

Baguio City Police Chief Isagani Nerez identified the suspect as Catalino Singayan Pepi, 49, a lawyer from Bawig, Zamboanga del Sur who resides along La Chesa Road, Irisan.

Nerez said the two warrants served on the lawyer were issued by Judge Aida Estrella Macapagal of the Parañaque City's Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 195 and Judge Theresa dela Torre-Yadao of the Quezon City's RTC Branch 81.

Nerez said the illegal recruitment charge that Pepi faced before Parañaque's RTC Branch 195 was docketed under Criminal Case 06-0334; while the estafa charges he faced before the same court were docketed under CC#s 06-0335 to 06-0343. A bail totaling P192,000 was recommended for his temporary freedom under the nine cases.

The large-scale illegal recruitment charge Pepi faced before the Quezon City's RTC Branch 81 was docketed under CC# Q-05-135733; while the 30 other estafa charges were docketed under CC#s Q-05-135702 to Q-05-135732, with a P954,000 recommended bail.
