Tuba bridge to open May 11 By Jane Cadalig
THE controversial Irisan Bridge in Tuba, Benguet is expected to open to vehicular traffic in two weeks time.
Provincial Engineer Anita Binay-an said Thursday that the foreign-assisted project is almost complete. "The bridge is 94 percent complete. The last pouring was done (Wednesday) and we are very certain it would be finished on May 8," she said.
The bridge, whose construction was subjected to several oppositions, is scheduled for inauguration and turnover on May 11. The Provincial Government allotted P3.7 million as counterpart for the 40-linear meter modular bridge.
Governor Borromeo Melchor said the vigilance of the communities had help in the early accomplishment of the project.
He lauded those who have been negative about the construction, saying that had it not been for their opposition and vigilance, which pressured the contractor, the project might not have been finished earlier than its expected completion date on June 2.
Amid objections from affected communities, Melchor ordered the closure of the bridge effective March 17 to pave the way for the construction of a concrete one.
The construction of the Irisan Bridge was supposed to start January but was delayed due to several objections and requests for deferment.
Residents, farmers and business groups opposed the closure, claiming it would adversely affect the economy, livelihood and tourism in the area.
They pushed for the put up of a detour while the project construction is underway, but did not materialize.
