Philex union holds jobs fair

THE Philex Mining Supervisory Employees Union (PMSEU) organized a jobs fair instead of the traditional "street marches and kilometric speeches" to commemorate Labor Day.

Renerio Lardizabal, president of the union, said one purpose of the jobs fair is to address the unemployment problem of fresh graduates in their community. He said the jobs fair is more significant and memorable than going to the streets to express their gripe against the government.

He said the jobs fair somehow averted the financial burden of jobseekers. "Instead of going to Manila to apply, the recruiters themselves are here to accommodate jobseekers," he said.

But Labor Regional Director Jalilo dela Torre disclosed that out of over 100 call center applicants, only five were deemed qualified. "We need to regain our competitive edge in English proficiency," he said.

Dela Torre said the jobs fair is part of the programs of the government agency to prepare for the projected closure of Philex Mines in 2011. "We will not wait for five more years. We don't want to deal with the problem when it is already there," he said.

In response to the special deployment program for caregivers to Spain, dela Torre said applicants would undergo the Spanish Language Training Program before their possible deployment to the country.

Seven out of 15 training and recruitment agencies attended the jobs fair. These include RRJM International Manpower Services Inc., Client logic, STD, Traces, Reliable Recruitment Corp., Topmaker, and GBMLT.

Meanwhile, Benguet Representative Samuel Dangwa's wife Olga turned over P25,000 as emergency, school and livelihood assistance.

"Marching in the streets is not a good example to our children. Rather, let's make the Labor Day more memorable," Dangwa said.

More than 400 applicants registered during the Philex jobs fair organized by the PMSEU, the Trade Union Congress of the Philippines (TUCP) and the labor department in cooperation with Philex Mining Corporation. (MJB/MRL/MMSU Interns)
