Dad defends La Trinidad's peaceful town award

LA TRINIDAD Councilor William Esteban shielded the Municipal Government from claims that the town never declared any categorical position with regard illegal gambling.

Esteban said municipal officials have been firm in opposing the proliferation of gambling in their area of jurisdiction. "We have been consistently passing resolutions declaring our opposition to illegal gambling and we have been reiterating these resolutions to concerned offices. In fact, La Trinidad joined Baguio City in opposing the operations of a casino there," he said.

The councilor's sentiments came out after some members of the Provincial Board (PB) of Benguet hesitated in approving his proposed resolution, which lauded La Trinidad for winning last year's nationwide search for the best municipal peace and order councils.

Board Member Liso Agpas vacillated in supporting the measure, saying he has yet to hear from the Municipal Government any pronouncement that it condemns illegal gambling.

Another board member, Johnny Uy, said there is no need to boast the town's award since there are still illegal activities, such as hold-ups, that occur in La Trinidad.

Despite the arguments, the PB was persuaded to approve the town's commendation, after Board Member Aloysius Kato said there is nothing wrong in lauding a local government unit for a worthy achievement. (JC)
