Kintoman rice supply in danger By Rimaliza Opiña
THE supply of the Kintoman or red rice, produced mostly in Kabayan, Benguet, is now threatened following the conversion of rice farms into vegetable plantations.
Vice Mayor Victor Cosalan issued the statement last Monday as more rice farmers shifted to vegetable farming since they are assured of more income.
Compared to only a single harvest, farmers are assured of at least three harvests when they plant vegetables, Cosalan said but was quick to add that the local government has intensified its campaign in promoting the planting of the Kintoman because farmers also benefit for planting the rice variety since this is priced higher than the white rice variety.
Rich in protein and other essential nutrients, Kintoman is sold for P50 a kilo at the local market.
Meanwhile, Mayor Ernesto Matuday said a college would soon be put up in the town's poblacion.
Matuday said this is the reason why the Kamora National High School (KNHS) would begin accepting students for fourth-year level beginning school year 2007-2008. Kabayan is also host another high school, the Adaway High School, an annex of the KNHS. "The establishment of the two high schools is justifiable as we intend to push for the construction of a college here," he said.
Kabayan was recently classified as a fourth class municipality. It posted an income of P25,801,791 in 2005.
