Quarrying in Mount Polis continues: vice guv

QUARRYING at the foot of Mount Polis in Ifugao goes on despite a directive from the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB), said Provincial Board (PB) presiding officer and Vice Governor Glen Prudenciano on Monday.

Prudenciano said the Provincial Government could not entirely put a stop to quarrying activities at Mount Polis as there remains a deficiency in alternative livelihood programs for residents who depend on quarrying as their source of income.

He said the only remedy initiated by the Provincial Government at the moment is banning the use of heavy equipment in quarrying activities. "No massive excavations are done," he said, adding that activities are done only by residents in the area.

He stressed that the local government and residents abide by the land use plan.

Earlier, MGB Regional Director Neoman dela Cruz advised local officials of Ifugao to maintain the land use plan of the surrounding areas of Mount Polis, which is located in the boundary of Ifugao and Mountain Province.

Dela Cruz said that continuous quarrying affected Mount Polis's classification as a mossy forest reservation.

In an earlier meeting of the Regional Development Council in Bontoc, Mountain Province, the group reiterated that to maintain the area as a forest reserve, no development should be done in the area. The body also suggested the creation of a Provincial Mining Regulatory Board to oversee the operation of small-scale as well as aggregate miners. (RO)
