Asin Road closure nears By Jane Cadalig
BENGUET Governor Borromeo Melchor said Tuesday that communities affected by the Irisan Bridge closure might have to endure another development consequence with the Provincial Government's plan to rehabilitate the road leading to their place.
Melchor said portion of Asin Road, which links Baguio City to Barangays Nangalisan, Tadiangan and San Pascual, all in Tuba, would be closed to vehicular traffic as soon as the financial aid for the project is released.
He said the province is awaiting the release of the P2 million fund from the Office of Senator Juan Flavier, intended for the rehabilitation of Asin Road, particularly the Tunnel portion. He expects the fund to be released next month.
The governor earlier advised residents of affected barangays, who have been opposing the closure of the Irisan Bridge, to be ready for another closure, this time, for the realization of the Asin Tunnel improvement.
Roger Sinot, one of the Asin Hot Springs operators who have been adamant in objecting the closure of Irisan Bridge, asked the Provincial Government to first hold consultations among affected communities before implementing the Asin Tunnel improvement to avoid problems like those that occurred during the bridge construction.
"We favor development but they should first consult the people who would be suffering before implementing whatever projects," Sinot said.
He said the province should exert more effort in seeking possible remedies to avoid total closure of the road.
The Austrian-assisted Irisan Bridge project, worth P12 million, was reopened to vehicle traffic last week.
