Town hopes to operate controlled dumpsite by June
By Jane Cadalig

IT IS not yet late for La Trinidad to operate a controlled garbage disposal and management facility.

While all other towns in the Cordillera region at the initial stage yet of putting up their ecological solid waste facilities, La Trinidad is on its way to operate its own, a first of its kind in Northern Luzon.

Only finishing touches are to be implemented and the town’s controlled dumpsite will start accommodating refuse.

Republic Act (RA) 9003 or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000 mandates all local government units (LGUs) nationwide to replace their open garbage sites with a controlled dumpsite.

The law also provides that all controlled dumps shall be replaced by a sanitary landfill by the year 2007.

La Trinidad is expecting its controlled disposal facility to operate within this year, the first to be established in the region and probably in Northern Luzon.

Mayor Nestor Fongwan said the town is facilitating the early operation of the garbage site, located in Sitio Induyan in Barangay Alno here. He said this may start accommodating refuse by next month.

The Municipality started the construction of the facility middle of 2004.

Other towns in Benguet and in other provinces are either in the process of scouting for a suitable place to put up the controlled dump facility or currently sourcing out funds to implement the project.

The ecological solid waste facility, which includes a materials recovery facility and a bioreactor to convert biodegradable wastes into useful compost.

The non-biodegradable materials that will be dumped at the controlled garbage facility would be covered with soil and compacted.
