Treasure hunting to be stopped: mayor By Rimaliza Opiña
EVEN as the Baguio City Government lacks jurisdiction over treasure hunting activities here, the city's chief executive vowed that any activity that could endanger the life of the residents would immediately be eliminated.
Mayor Braulio Yaranon said permits for treasure hunting are evaluated by National Government agencies such as the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) and supervised by the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).
He said the role of the local government unit (LGU) is limited only to general supervision of activities and the safety of structures and residents living in areas where diggings are done.
Councilor Leandro Yangot Jr. earlier filed a proposal that sought to regulate treasure hunting activities within Baguio. The alderman explained that digging threaten the stability of the soil, which in turn, threaten the steadiness of structures built on top.
Yaranon, meanwhile, debunked speculations that treasure hunting could be the reason why the DPWH is bent on proceeding with the construction of the Baguio General Hospital (BGH) flyover.
The mayor said aside from the diggings done at the base of the structure's posts, no treasure hunting activities have been observed.
