Replacement of GMA food lane stickers sought
By Jane Cadalig

THE food lane stickers issued by the government to vegetable delivery trucks from Benguet have sown confusion among law enforcement agencies. Truckers claimed this has resulted to unequal treatment.

The Benguet Vegetable Truckers and Traders Association Inc. claimed they are having a hard time convincing law enforcers on what type of food lane stickers are to be recognized.

They said the temporary stickers are being honored more than the new and official stickers issued them by the Department of Agriculture.

The temporary stickers, issued to them in 2004, bear the image of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo while the official one merely contained reflectorized letters bearing the term `food lane'. The sticker is accompanied by a food lane certification from the DA, and is the official food lane seal.

"The old stickers, which were issued before as temporary stickers, are being honored more than the official ones because it bears madam's (PGMA) picture," said BTTAI president Benny Hipolito.

They also asked other delivery trucks to use the official sticker, costing P1,000 each. This seal also determines if a vegetable delivery truck is a legitimate member of the BTTA.

The food lane project was launched to facilitate the delivery of agricultural crops to the Metro Manila areas. Trucks bearing these stickers are exempted from the truck ban, which is being implemented along the Metro Manila roads.

Truckers also said this has spared them from extortion, which had been causing them additional losses and delays in the delivery of vegetables.
