Allocation of antioxidants for Irisan folk pushed
By Rimaliza Opiña

THE health department and the Baguio Health Department (BHD) were asked on Tuesday to institute immediate measures to curb the effects of inhaling fumes brought about by the recent burning of the Irisan dumpsite.

Reacting to reports that children living near the dumpsite have been hospitalized for various respiratory illnesses allegedly due to inhalation of fumes emanating from the dumpsite, Councilor Erdolfo Balajadia urged the health department and the BHD to provide antioxidants to affected residents, pending the eventual closure of the dumpsite.

The dumpsite's closure would take place as soon as this is bid out, following the approval last May 15 by the City Council of P18.7 million that would be used to convert it into a controlled dump facility.

"The dumpsite has reached a high level of susceptibility to disaster due to the increasing volume of methane gas emission over the past years," Balajadia said in a proposed resolution, adding that hazardous gas brought about by the fire greatly endangers the health of city residents, putting those living nearby in a greater risk.

The councilor explained that providing antioxidants would help boost the immune system of the residents.
