La Trinidad village ups water resources protection
AS COUNTERPART to the Municipal Government's effort in preserving the environment, officials of Barangay Pico in La Trinidad have instituted rules for the protection of their water resources.
The barangay council passed an ordinance banning individuals, groups, establishments, whether public and private, from putting up structures within the premises of springs and creeks so as not to contaminate, deplete and hamper the flow of water from said sources.
This however is without prejudice to the establishment of structures that would benefit the constituents like footpaths, bridges, flood control, and irrigation facilities.
Establishment of deep wells within the premises of water sources or any other area adjacent to these bodies of water is also prohibited.
Likewise, dumping of garbage industrial, toxic and other similar waste into the springs and creeks, including the canals connected to the bodies of water, will be penalized.
Barangay Pico has at least three springs and four creeks.
Farmers' groups and other cause-oriented organizations were tapped to help in the monitoring and reporting of activities that violate provisions of the barangay ordinance.
Also, individuals and households benefiting from the creeks and springs were encouraged to conduct voluntary clearing and cleaning of water sources and other similar activities to conserve and safeguard the resources.
Violators will be fined with P1,000 or demolition or removal of improvements introduced within the springs and creeks' premises.
The barangay's move complements efforts done by the local government in continuously protecting the environment. (JC)
