Cordi police chief vows to protect militants
POLICE Regional Director Raul Gonzales on Sunday assured that the police force is not conducting any form of surveillance among members of militant groups here.
Gonzales also said that the police have not done any case study on militant groups because they are avoiding the possibility that this might be misconstrued as monitoring the movement of the groups. He also vowed that the police would protect anybody whose life is under threat.
"It is the duty of the police to protect everyone," he said.
Earlier, members of at least two militant groups based in Baguio sought the assistance of the Baguio City Police Office because their leaders were reportedly being followed by unknown men.
The Bayan Muna and the Cordillera Peoples Alliance implicated the military in the surveillance. But the Civil Relations Service of the Philippine Army (PA) denied the allegation.
Gonzales, meanwhile, is not keen on supporting moves to arm media practitioners. He said there are more disadvantages if members of the media are given permits to carry firearms.
But in the light of the series of killings involving journalists, Gonzales also guaranteed protection and revealed that steps have already been undertaken to assure that equal protection is granted to members of the so-called fourth estate. (RO)
