60-strong wushu team off to nat'l championship
PERRENIAL regional team title-holder Baguio will field a 60-strong contingent competing in the 2006 National Wushu championships set on June 17-18 at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium in Manila.
Baguio-Cordillera chapter president Tansuitong Candelaria of the Wushu Federation Philippines (WFP) said the team will compete in taolu and in sanshou in both the junior and senior male and female divisions.
The juniors division will be powered by regional gold medalists Ge-Je Esutaquio, Rex Manawit and Jerwin Lohan while the seniors' female division will be led by Lea Gamboa and Joy Dagdagen.
Candelaria also pins his hopes on Raj Dulay, Roy Docyogen, Delver Mangaolle, Joel Amurao, Joseph Pasiwat and Edward Kelly for a medal haul in the seniors' male class.
"This competition is part of (the) weeklong Philippine Olympic Festival that (will) lead to the celebration of the Olympic Day which is commemorated throughout the world," said WFP president Julian Camacho.
Candelaria has begun scrounging for support to raise the team budget of P161,400, saying it would be a waste if local athletes would miss the national event, the city being a top producer of international caliber practitioners of the martial art.
City sports coordinator Edison Villafuerte said he has started working out the release of P40,000 subsidy to the team.
Other Baguio campaigners are regional silver medallists Charlton Kaley, Chester Pakurao Melchor Langeg, Marion Binwag, Soriano Sicomen, Bernard Dumar, Nelson Sucayen, Ranny Cayat, Johnson Badeng, Liza Sabling, Sharon Patchang and Jackie Mayyong.
Also in the team are bronze medallists Rex Allan, Edgar Adiwang, Charlie Allan, Ferdinand Ansong, Elisio Valdez, Luther Bolislis, Lloyd Faraden, Kevin Belingon. Datu Eli Dalanda, Alvin Berto, Dexter Danglosi, Edwin Dipidip, Freddie Bulkero, Sharon Felipe, Carina Capaweng and Rubylene Libalib. (RD)
