Not much land left for city, barangay needs: environment office
By Rimaliza Opiña

THE Baguio City Planning Office has finalized the mapping of and identification of the city's land needs in time for the deadline set by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).

Planning Officer Arturo Orig said problem areas identified by the planning office would be forwarded to the Bureau of Lands and the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples (NCIP) while others would have to be brought to court for final resolution.

Orig declined to name the barangays that are said to be "problem areas" pending the approval of Mayor Braulio Yaranon, who recently met with Undersecretary for Lands Manuel Gerochi.

But even as the planning office already concluded its identification of city or barangay land needs, Orig revealed that "there is not much left" of lands that are supposed to be used by the city government for future projects, mainly for housing projects. He said overpopulation affected the status of lands in Baguio since settlers have already occupied public lands.

Orig said the only remedy is for the City Government to protect the remaining lands from encroachment.

This development meanwhile would serve as a go-signal for the DENR to proceed with the plotting of public and private lands and even resume the acceptance of townsite sales applications (TSAs).

The DENR postponed its acceptance of TSAs following the City Government's failure to submit the city's land needs last April.
