Jobs fair every 1st Sunday of the month set

THE labor department in Cordillera on Wednesday announced the start of two employment initiatives expected to benefit Baguio's out-of-school youth and jobseekers - every first Sunday jobs fair and Megabyte.

Starting July 2 and every first Sundays of the month thereafter, the labor department will conduct jobs fair in partnership with the City Government of Baguio and the Baguio City National High School (BCNHS). Venue is at the BCNHS Flavier Gymnasium.

Labor Regional Director Jolly dela Torre said that with the program, jobseekers from Baguio and Cordillera should not wait for periodic announcements to look for jobs because they would know that every first Sunday of the month is "let's-look-for-a-job" day.

He said the job-hunting process becomes routine in the jobseekers' monthly calendars, and ultimately becomes a positive habit.

"The advantage of monthly jobs fair is that we are able to manage the numbers and the crowd well, and at the same time, it means less hassle for the jobseekers," he said.

"Employers and recruitment agencies will also be able to conduct their interviews in a more congenial atmosphere," he added.

Dela Torre also announced the launching of Megabyte or the Movement for the Empowerment and General Advancement of Baguio's Youth Through Information Technology Education. The Megabyte is a non-fee charging training program targeting the out-of-school youth of Baguio to train and prepare them for jobs in the business process outsourcing industry and in other Information Technology-enabled industries.

Dela Torre said the department recently received 20 units of desktop computers from ClientLogic Philippines, the first and biggest call center in Baguio, to be used during the training. Megabyte is also being implemented in partnership with the Public Employment Service Office (Peso) and the SK Federation of Baguio City, ClientLogic, the Technical Educational Skills Development Authority (Tesda), the Commission on Higher Education (Ched), the education department, Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company (PLDTC), PSITE, and Apcas.

The project will self-terminate in one year's time. After that, the computers will be donated to public elementary schools in Baguio, which will adopt the "Catch Them Early Program" (CTEP) of the Josefa Cariño Elementary School (JCES).

CTEP is an experiment in basic education undertaken by JCES under the direction of Dr. William Rilveria, the principal, which uses an all-English curriculum for Grade 1. It has dramatically resulted in the improvement of the reading skills in English of Grade 1 pupils in that school.

Out-of-school youth are encouraged to register with their respective barangay leaders to be able to participate in Megabyte.
