Baguio hosts kids' int'l summer village
THE Children's International Summer Village (CISV) is hosted by Baguio this year. Children of different races and faces converged in the City of Pines to experience, even for a moment, the life in the highlands.
The delegation arrived from Manila last Sunday. There are two groups or camps set up in the Philippines, one in Quezon City and the other here in Baguio, particularly at the Brent School. Each delegation has 12 children aged 11 years old from different countries.
Last year's delegation went to Denmark, the native land of writer Hans Christian Anderson.
The CISV was founded by Dr. Doris Allen, a psychologist. In her own words, Allen set her vision and mission for the organization in 1983. "As a psychologist who had specialized in growth and development, I knew we should invert our perspective and look at children as potential agents of social change. I knew the extent to which they, when adults, would make decisions based upon attitudes and emotions learned in their pre-adolescent years. I knew that the ultimate source for peace, long range, lay with the children," she said.
CISV has a number of International Programmes all geared towards instilling better awareness and values formation. However, the original program, the Village, is the flagship program of the international organization. It is a multi-language camp and features a mix of educational, cultural and sporting activities, which emphasize cooperative global and intercultural living.
A Village lasts 28 days or nearly a month. Parents are not allowed inside the camps. There are designated coordinators and leaders for the kids who will be responsible for their activities and care while in the camp.
