Military cadettes rule 'Takbong Pangkasarinlan'
PHILIPPINE Military Academy (PMA) cadettes Elizabeth Rosete (38.33 minutes), Mildred Venturina (39.41 minutes), and Sajar Foronda (40.37 minutes) dominated in the "Takbong Pangkasarinlan" in a 1-2-3 winning fashion in the 10-kilometer (18 years old and above) in the female open division category.
The PMA also received special awards as the biggest delegation and having the most number of winners in college division during the fun run held last June 25, which started from Harrison Road, ascending to Session Road, Governor Pack Road and selected main thoroughfares in every categories and finally to the finish line in the Burnham Park.
Jerry Lindawan clocked 27.37 minutes to bag the first place followed by Sabino Ramon (28.27 minutes) and Joel Bentoy clocking 29.11 minutes for third place in the 18 years and above 10km (male) open division, respectively.
The fun run was organized by the City Government, the Baguio Amateur Sports Improvement Council (Basic) headed by Charles Cheng, and the education department where 3,000 registered runners participated in the activity as part of the Independence Day celebration in the city.
In the three-kilometer six to eight-years-old category, Jhonel Bello of the Bakakeng Elementary School took home the crown followed by Carlos Alvarez of the Quirino Elementary School and JB Balaba of the Old Lucban Elementary School for second and third places, respectively, in the boys division while Romalene dela Cruz of the Baguio Central Elementary School and Dianne Bucatan of the Aguinaldo Elementary School placed top two, respectively.
In the five-kilometer run, Jomar Santos of the Mabini Elementary School outran opponents Jobert Bontoc of the Aguinaldo Elementary School and Orlando Galiza, who finished second and third, respectively, in the nine to 11-years-old (boys category) while Jeziel Bengtay of the Old Lucban Elementary School followed by Mary Grace Guanes also of the Old Lucban Elementary School and Rolyne Kay Anos of the UC-Elementary School were the top three in the girl's division, respectively.
In the 12 to 13-years-old five-kilometer run, Pines City National High School runners Crison Giodasen and Philip Bugayong placed first and second while Benjie As-il of the Baguio City National High School (BCNHS) finished third in the male category. Lady runners from BCNHS ruled the women's division courtesy of Jessa Mangsat, Jovelyn Espejo and Catherine Aries, also in a 1-2-3 winning fashion.
The 10-kilometer 14 to 15-years-old category was won by Mielmar Rioloda of BCNHS followed by Fernel dela Cruz also of BCNHS and Sergio Pagaduan of the Irisan National High School while Odette Dasayan, Rolyne Kay of UC-LHS ruled the women's division.
Winners in the 10-kilometer 16 to 17-years-old category are Ceasar Castaneto, Robert Andres of the Pine City National High School (PCNHS) and Bars Fanag-ey, respectively, in the male division while Catherine Kay Santos of BCNHS, Lovely Gay Prudencio and Cherrylyn Amangan of INHS took home top prizes in women's division.
Major Brigilio Balaba of PMA was the oldest runner while the youngest was Carlos Alvares and Carla Macalas.
The Quezon Elementary School, Baguio National High School and PMA won the biggest delegation in their respective divisions while the most number of winners are participants from the Old Lucban Elementary School, Baguio City National High School and PMA, also in their respective divisions.
Despite some lapses in recording the official time and names of some runners, the organizers still tried their best to identify the winners who will be receiving their respective medals courtesy of Baguio Representative Mauricio Domogan plus cash incentives from the City Government.
City Administrator Peter Fianza lauded the Lions Club of Baguio, headed by past district governor Peter Go, and the Baguio-Filipino Cantonese Association headed by Peter Ng for giving nutritional soup and water to the runners.
Fianza also commended the support of various group during the fun run as he vowed that more "takbo' activities will be initiated by his office to support the city's sports programs. Coaches from various schools also vowed to help bring back the city as the top producer of runners in the middle and long distance competition where Baguio milers ruled supreme years back.
"Baguio was the best in running competition. Let's help one another, pool our resources and expertise together to bring back the glory of Baguio," Cheng and Fianza challenged the coaches during the awarding ceremony. (BC)
