Shell active chess 2nd leg in Baguio
THE race for the 2006 Shell National Youth Active Chess Championship grand finals resumed last Sunday with the staging of the second leg in Baguio participated by new sets of talents expected to vie for top honors in the junior division (for players aged 20 years old and below) and kiddies division (for players aged 14 years old and below).
The Baguio event served as the first of two Northern Luzon legs held in SM Baguio in cooperation with SM Supermalls and sanctioned by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP).
Former Benguet governor and National Chess Federation of the Philippines director Raul Molintas delivered the special message to 500 participants who came from the different areas in Northern Luzon and the National Capital Region (NCR), reminding them to be strong and never quit during the games.
Baguio Mayor Braulio Yaranon, meanwhile, delivered an inspirational message, saying that "life is like a game of chess and no one should surrender."
The eight-leg chess tournament will culminate in October's grand finals, with the champion in the juniors division receiving P30,000 and the kiddies champion getting P20,000. Leg winners in the junior and kiddies categories will receive P5,000 and P4,000 respectively.
The top three players in each category, after the seven round robins Swiss system tournament, will join top finishers of the seven other legs in the grand finals slated on Oct. 21-22, 2006 in SM City North Edsa.
In the recently concluded NCR leg, Vic Neil Villanueva of the University of Sto. Tomas (UST) and Jude Fronda of San Juan de Letran bagged the champion's crown in the juniors and kiddies divisions, respectively.
Joining Villanueva were Junar Valeros of the Adamson University (AU) and Luke Farre of San Sebastian while Haridas Pascua of the Philippine Christian University (PCU) and Loren Laceste of Letran booked the two other grand final spots in the kiddies' category.
