Fight vs pay parking firm to go on: mayor
WITH the issuance of a status quo order from the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) last week, as to the position of Baguio City Mayor Braulio Yaranon, the city’s top executive emphasized that the fight against Jadewell Parking Systems Corporation will go on.
When asked during his Ugnayan weekly media forum on what steps should be taken for the rescission of the pay parking contract, he said "it is on the City Council’s shoulders."
"The fastest way to stop Jadewell is (to) repeal the ordinance, wala na sila (then they will cease to exist)," he said.
He also rued Jadewell’s claims that their contract is legitimate as it was supported by a council ordinance and implemented in 2001.
The mayor noted the Baguiotes are now more informed about Jadewell and other social matters, as they have “mushroomed” to support him as well as against the “illegal” parking firm.
"We are happy that public opinion is crystallizing in the city of Baguio and public opinion certainly is the best guardian to protect the rights and liberties of the sovereign people of Baguio," he said.
"The moment the sovereign people move, all politicians, including myself have to bow to them, to their wishes," he continued.
Asked about the groups who rallied against Jadewell, he claimed that they are crusaders on their own, as they have realized the illegalities being done. "The people know," he said.
Informed that steps are being done by council members to repeal the contract, the mayor said that councilors who are "really interested in protecting the rights of our people" should repeal the ordinance.
The mayor said that he basically anchors his fight against Jadewell in his belief that it is graft and corruption for a private entity to accept payment for the use of the streets as "the streets are beyond the commerce of man." This was also used as his main battle-cry during the 2004 elections which he won hands down.
In a related development, a closed door meeting was scheduled to discuss Jadewell matters on August 1, as councilors mulled their options on the proposed rescission of the Jadewell parking contract. (JGF)
