10 water refill stations monitored
THE City Health Office (CHO) and the Baguio Association of Purified and Mineral Water Refillers (BAPMWR) are keeping a tight watch on 10 water-refilling stations that sell drinking water that is cheap but reportedly of questionable quality.
BAPMWR president Nellie Olairez said the water refillers usually sell a five-gallon water at P15, while the common price of bottled water is sold at P25 to P40. She said the price covers the cost of the maintenance of ozonation and sterilization machines, gasoline for delivery, employee benefits and for the purchase of water, in case a retailer does not have its own source of water.
Given the process and expenses involved in the processing of sterilized water, Olairez said the P15 selling price is doubtful since quality may have been sacrificed to meet the cost for a cheaper processing of water.
The group submitted a resolution to Mayor Braulio Yaranon, asking for the mayor's endorsement to their plan, that prior to the application of sanitation permits from the CHO, the 173 refilling stations in Bgauio will have to first obtain clearance from the group.
"This is to police our own ranks," said Olairez, admitting that the 10 refilling stations are also members of their group. (RO)
