City wants use of coconets limited to open spaces
THE use of coconets to stabilize soil and control erosion is not advisable in steep areas, said the City Engineer Office (CEO).
The report prompted the City Council committee on public works to recommend that the use of coconets be only to open areas such as parks, forest reserves, and watersheds where erosions happen.
The committee said using coconet would protect not only the soil but also promote the growth of the natural vegetation cover.
Councilor Faustino Olowan earlier proposed that to avoid the destruction of the city's riprap walls similar to what happened to the Magsaysay retaining wall, future projects should use coconets since this reportedly stabilizes the soil.
Earlier, Senator Ramon "Bong" Revilla Jr. vowed to assist the City Government in rehabilitating the collapsed portion of Magsaysay. He also facilitated the immediate release of P1.5 million from the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) for the wall's repair.
District Engineer Nerie Bueno said the repair of the structure would cost P30 million but no amount has been allocated yet. She stressed that the landslide needs immediate action from concerned government agencies not because it is located in Baguio City but because of the dangers that it poses. (RO)
