IDs for solo parents pushed
SINGLE parents need not be alone in taking care of their children as moves are being done by the City Council in assisting them, a city councilor said on Tuesday.
Councilor Leandro Yangot Jr. also proposed that identification cards be issued to single parents so they could easily avail of assistance pursuant to Republic Act (RA) 8972 or the Solo Parent Welfare Act of 2000.
He stressed that single parents have to be given easier access to services sanctioned by RA 8972, such as counseling and free health care.
A similar measure was proposed earlier with the City Council.
The proposal, penned by Councilor Perlita Chan-Rondez, aims to provide nursing rooms for mothers in establishments like malls and restaurants. Rondez said providing rooms in these establishments to nurse babies have both economic and health benefits because the purchase of infant formula is either stopped or lessened.
She added that breastfeeding also strengthens the bond between a mother and her child.
The two proposals were forwarded to the City Council committee on social services, chaired by Councilor Galo Weygan, for study and appropriate action. (RO)
