Speedy creation of water plant urged
STRAWBERRY growers in La Trinidad, Benguet are demanding the immediate construction of a water treatment plant at the strawberry farms here.
This after the Provincial Government of Benguet entered into a memorandum of agreement (MOA) with the Benguet State University (BSU) and other concerned agencies for the establishment of a water treatment facility for the irrigation of the strawberry farms.
Under the agreement, the La Trinidad Water District (LTWD) will be responsible for the completion of the treatment plant.
In a petition, members of the Strawberry Farmers Association Inc. (Sfai) asked the province to endorse the immediate implementation of the project.
The farmers said there is a need to put up the facility soon so as not to disturb their activities come farming season.
"(We) are requesting the concerned officials to endorse to the LTWD the immediate implementation of the filtration plant so that it will not delay the farming operation (as may be brought by) the construction of sewer diversion canal, mini-dam, concrete water tank and other activities," they said.
The LTWD is using the irrigation pumps originally intended for the strawberry farms but these facilities are remotely located from the farms, and farmers claim it is costly for them to maintain the equipment.
The facilities are now being maintained by the LTWD in providing potable water to its customers. (JC)
