Leadership forum set

BAGUIO will play host to the Commission on Higher Education (Ched)-endorsed School Empowerment and Leadership Forum (Self) on August 28-30 at the Baguio Teachers Camp.

With the theme "From Classroom to Workplace: Bridging the Education and Industry Gap," the two-day conference seeks to equip graduates with competencies needed for them to be competitive through learning interventions on leadership styles, communication competence and personality skills as discussed by 10 top industry specialists who will share the secrets of how to get ahead in the business world.

Featured speakers include representatives of renowned business and industry institutions such as the Asian Institute of Management (AIM), Asian Institute of Management Alumni Association (Aimaa), Philippine Marketing Association (PMA), Personnel Management Association of the Philippines (Pmap), Management Association of the Philippines (MAP), International Association of Business Communicators (IABC), Public Relations Society of the Philippines (PRSP), Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI), Go Negosyo Movement, the Department of Education (DepEd), and the Ched.

Ched Chairman Carlito Puno already released a memorandum endorsing the forum for the support and participation of all concerned.

The forum is a timely intervention, in light of the English Language Learning Immersion Zone program recently launched by the Ched in partnership with the Department of Labor and Employment (Dole) and the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (Tesda).

The program seeks to upgrade the communication skills and help graduates manage the stress of job interviews.

"And yet, getting the job and growing in the job are two different things" said conference organizer Henry Tenedero, president of the Center for Learning and Teaching Styles Philippines.

Tenedero believed that to be competitive in the next century, individuals will have to do a lot more critical thinking - analyzing problems, proposing solutions, trouble-shooting, communicating with others, and managing their time. "Today's jobs demand a high level of ability for teamwork, skillful dealing with clients, ability to troubleshoot when needed and complete commitment to work. Self-discipline, consistency and a high level of motivation are important drivers for a good professional. Yet, these are unwritten boundaries and borders of workplace professional behavior that are neither taught in the classroom nor discussed in textbooks," he said.

The forum also aims to establish partnerships between education and industry, and to make industry an important contributor to curriculum development. Curriculum planners, school administrators, guidance counselors, legislators and public officials involved in the field of education are expected to benefit from the featured discussions.

A special student rate is also being extended by the conference organizers to all interested fourth year high school and college students as part of their contribution to the continued growth and development of future young professionals.

Interested participants may register with the conference secretariat through email address ilsc06@yahoo.com.ph, or by calling (074) 446 9866.
