Self-employment strengthening measures mulled
COUNCILOR Leandro Yangot Jr. is pushing for the strengthening of self-employment --a means to reduce the increasing number of unemployed in the country.
Yangot proposed that in the barangays, livelihood seminars, focusing on short-term courses, be held.
"Poverty can be alleviated if the inhabitants of the city are gainfully employed and social services are adequately provided. But reality dictates that the government cannot provide jobs to every unemployed constituent - what it can possibly do is to provide them opportunities for employment or to teach and train the unemployed how to be self-reliant," he stressed.
As determined by the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO), Yangot said food preservation, basket-making and flower arrangement, candle-making, paper-folding, soap-making and entrepreneurship are some of the courses that could be taught in the barangays.
Pointing out that the government could not provide jobs to every constituent, Yangot said only a training program, which would equip those unemployed to look for their own means of livelihood, remains the most practicable solution to unemployment. (RO)
