Village bans use of cemetery by outsiders By Jane Cadalig
TO AVOID overcrowding, a barangay in La Trinidad has prohibited the use of its burial ground by non-residents.
Officials of Barangay Pico declared that the 2,000-square meter cemetery is for the sole use of their residents as well as required the payment of P200 as burial and annual cemetery maintenance fees.
The move was passed to protect and maintain the cemetery, prevent congestion of graves and maintain peace and order within the public graveyard, particularly during the observance of the All Souls' Day and to maintain the respect for the dead.
Individuals who will bury their dead at the cemetery are required to first secure barangay and other necessary clearances to ensure that the deceased was a resident of the barangay.
Also, residents who may want to transfer the remains of their dead from the Pico Cemetery to another place should obtain the needed clearance.
Meanwhile, construction of shades over graves and fencing of grave surroundings also need permits.
The lots where graves were installed but left unattended 15 years from the date of burial would be declared vacant and open for other's use.
Persons found violating the prohibited acts specified under the barangay ordinance will be fined with P1,000 for every violation.
