ADDITIONAL activities have been slated for the month-long celebration of Baguio's 97th charter anniversary -- the launching of the search for outstanding individuals and groups, and preparation for the city's centenary in 2009.

This was announced by City Administrator Peter Fianza during the press launching at the City Hall multipurpose hall, with other organizer-participants from private and government offices.

Anchored on the theme "Solidarity Towards the Centenary", the activities are geared towards inculcating in each citizen the idea that singular efforts could be bound together for substantial changes in the city's environs, for the future generation.

Activities in culture and the arts, music, the environment, a medical and dental mission, jobs fair, sports and bodybuilding competition were scheduled in various venues throughout September.

The Baguio Arts Guild will launch on August 27 the 19th anniversary exhibit at the Baguio Botanical Garden while creative expressions for young people dubbed as "Dance for Life" shall be launched on August 30 at 6 p.m. at the Baguio Convention Center (BCC).

Baguio Day formally starts with a program on September 1 at BCC with main focus on the search for outstanding citizens and organizations, and the search for young outstanding citizens.

A parade with five contingents shall weave its way along Session Road, Magsaysay Avenue up to Melvin Jones after the program at BCC, if weather permits. Marching bands from the Philippine Military Academy, Saint Louis University, Baguio City National High School, Pines City National High School and SLU High School band shall lead each contingent with city officials, religious leaders, national line agencies, barangay officials, members of the academe, civic groups, private and business establishments in each grouping.

If it rains, the audience shall be treated to a review of marching bands in the same venue. An invitational darts tournament shall also push through at 10 a.m. at the Cozy Nook along Magsaysay Avenue.

A musical afternoon is promised to music lovers in a community choir concert dubbed "One Voice, One Melody IV" at the BCC. The concert features a combination of performances from different singing groups in the city.

A one-day BAG art exhibit shall be done at the CAP building in Camp John Hay for art lovers. A benefit concert shall go on at the same venue at 7 p.m. on September 1.

The BAG exhibit goes on for the whole month of September at the Botanical Garden, Baguio City Hall lobby and BCC, as with another eight-man one-month art exhibit, simultaneously at the Baguio-Mt. Provinces Museum.

On September 2, China Bank will sponsor a poster-making competition from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Malcolm Square, while dance sport competitions go on at the BCC from 2 p.m. until evening. The dance sport shall feature contestants not only from the city, but also from Vigan, Bulacan, and Tarlac and also seasoned senior citizen dancers.

The Cueshe band shall be playing to its own followers at the University of Baguio Gym, from 3:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. that same day.

Badminton enthusiasts shall also have a tournament for two whole days -- September 2 and 3 -- at the St. Vincent Gymnasium.

September 9 will be filled with activities as well, with the Christian Community "Solidarity" tree planting in the morning, the voters information campaign leaders forum at 3 p.m., a concert at 6 p.m., and the Nick Domalsin Cup bodybuilding competition at the BCC at 5 p.m.

September 9 also marks the start of the Charter Anniversary Judo Invitational at the PMA. This shall go on for two days at the same venue.

On the 10th of September, the Bantay-Bata outreach program shall render various services including parenting counseling, children activities, free legal consultation, and birth registration at the BCC main hall. A motorcade along the main thoroughfares a day earlier is also scheduled.
