City stays away from Beneco conversion squabble

THE Baguio City Government will not dip its hands in the controversy emanating from the tug-of-war of groups pushing for the conversion of the Benguet Electric Cooperative (Beneco) into a stock cooperative, stock corporation or to maintain the current status of the cooperative - a non-stock, non-profit entity.

Acting Vice Mayor Leandro Yangot Jr., a former member of the Beneco board of director, said the decision should be left to the discretion of member-consumers because the options have been explained to the public.

He said the City Government respects the position taken by the Benguet Provincial Board but iterated that this matter should rests on the member-consumers. "We cannot take sides."

The Provincial Board (PB) is for the conversion of Beneco into a stock cooperative.

The referendum scheduled on September 2 was halted because of the issuance of a 20-day restraining order by Judge Danilo Camacho of the Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 63 in La Trinidad, on grounds that the general membership of Beneco never decided to include the option of converting the utility into a stock corporation.

To put order to the confusion among Beneco consumers, Beneco General Manager Gerardo Verzosa earlier challenged advocates of a stock cooperative to a public debate on the pros and cons of conversion.
