Returning Pinoy workers from Lebanon given business opportunity
By Ernie N. Olson Jr.

ALMOST all of the Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) from Baguio City and Benguet, who returned from war-torn Lebanon, were given opportunities to avail of alternative sources of income by putting up a business of their own.

This was made possible by the Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company (PLDT) and Smart Communications, whose personnel presented the Techno-Negosyo business opportunity package during a seminar set up for these returning OFWs, in coordination with the Technical Education & Skills Development Authority at the Golden Pine Hotel over the weekend.

PLDT Baguio business zone senior manager Fernando Marzan said the OFWs who have no money to invest in the program at first would be given an opportunity to work as sales agents of their company's products and services until such time that they could raise some capital.

Others who already have some funds to invest would be given the chance to avail themselves of their Techno-Negosyo package so they can open up Internet shops or cafes in their respective neighborhoods at affordable installment rates.

Senior technical education & skills development specialist Susan Carbonell, who conceptualized the program locally with PLDT business specialist Anne Lisse David, said the program was initially intended for another group, but with the recent developments in Lebanon where a large number of OFWs had to be forced to return to the Philippines for their safety and security, it was thought that this program could also benefit them.

Carbonell said of the recorded OFWs from Baguio City and Benguet, almost 50 recently returned from Lebanon.

David added almost 50 OFWs coming from Lebanon and those returning from other countries would also be given the opportunity to avail of the program.
