Jeepney operators oppose 'boundary' reduction By Rimaliza Opiña
THE local federation of jeepney drivers objected to a proposal pending at the Baguio City Council, prescribing a reduction in the amount of boundaries to be remitted to jeepney and taxi operators.
Federation of Jeepney Operators and Drivers Association-Baguio-Benguet-La Union president Perfecto Itliong Jr. said in a text message that just like drivers, they too are affected by the increase in the prices of fuel and as such, are also entitled to increase the amount of boundary remittances when the need arises.
He said there should be a consultation between operators and drivers so that matters involving adjustments on remittances would be ventilated.
To alleviate the plight of jeepney and taxi drivers, Councilors Galo Weygan, Rocky Thomas Balisong, Daniel Fariñas, Faustino Olowan and Leandro Yangot Jr., earlier proposed that the boundary remittances to operators be reduced.
The proponents pointed out that the steady increase in fuel prices vis-a-vis the fixed fare rates affects the income of drivers who remit the day's earnings regardless of the number of passengers they had.
"Taxi and jeepney fares are fixed prices imposed by the government and do not change (compared to) the prices of variable cost such as gasoline, making the net income of drivers suffer substantially," the aldermen stressed.
"At times when passengers are few, drivers find themselves with nothing left from the day?s earnings as take home pay," they added.
