Baguio is jueteng-free: police
BAGUIO City was free from the illegal numbers game as of September 8, Acting Mayor Reinaldo Bautista assured on Saturday.
The mayor banked on the report of City Police Chief Isagani Nerez, who assured city officials during a meeting that Baguio has been rid of jueteng in compliance with the nationwide directive of National Police Chief Oscar Calderon.
Bautista said he is counting on Nerez's statement even as he requested the Baguio police to sustain the situation through continuous operations.
As to the "Bingo sa Barangay" activities, which reportedly are being used as front of jueteng operations, Bautista said the issue on its legality or illegality is now pending with the courts. He said Association of Barangay Council (ABC) president and Councilor Rufino Panagan, who advocates for the "Bingo sa Barangay" as fund-raising activities of the barangays in the city, gave assurance that they will abide by whatever decision the court will render on the issue.
"If the court would say it is legal, they would continue the operation and if the court would say it is illegal, then they would stop it," he said.
At present, bingo operations continue in various barangays of Baguio. (AR)
