Anti-colorum group to be revived
COUNCILOR Rocky Thomas Balisong is eyeing the revival of the anti-colorum task force after noting that colorum motor vehicles made a come back and added to traffic congestion, especially at the central business district (CBD).
Balisong issued the statement during a recent public hearing where majority of public utility drivers pushed for the strict implementation of the moratorium.
The councilor said he is coordinating with acting Mayor Reinaldo Bautista Jr. for the resumption of the task force's operation. He said the body would also renew its deputation from the Department of Transportation and Communication (DOTC) so they could begin anew the apprehension of colorum vehicles.
The task force was formed last year to augment the number of personnel from the DOTC. Reportedly because of the lack of personnel, DOTC Regional Director Alfredo Mondiguing claimed the operation of colorum vehicles especially at night could not be suppressed entirely.
It was also at this time wherein legitimate taxi operators said the actual number of taxi units is more than double the number as per records of the transportation department.
The creation of the task force also came in the heels of a controversy last year when reports came out that some of its members, composed of City Hall employees and barangay officials, allegedly extort from drivers. In exchange, leeway is given to drivers even without the license to operate in the city.
But Balisong, the task force's chairperson, denied the reports saying that these were spread by a "syndicate" within the DOTC, whose operation, particularly the underground "approval" of franchises, was affected because of their group's operation. (RO)
