Dad bats for stay of pay parking rule By Rimaliza Opiña
WHILE majority of his colleagues are for the repeal of the pay parking ordinance, Councilor Federico Mandapat Jr. said Monday that only the memorandum of agreement (MOA) governing the operation of a private firm at the central business district (CBD) should be rescinded.
He said repealing the pay parking ordinance would also repeal the pay parking scheme in the barangays.
He stressed that if the intent is to stop the operation of Jadewell because it violated some provisions of its contract with the City Government, the repeal of the ordinance is not the proper remedy.
Mandapat agreed to sign the draft letter penned by Councilor Edilberto Tenefrancia, which stated that the City Council would not give in to the threat of Jadewell that they would be sued for contempt and violation of the rule on forum shopping.
But he said the pay-parking ordinance taxes only those who have vehicles who use public roads as their private parking space. He also asked his colleagues that their votes should not be based on public pressure but on facts contained in official documents.
