La Trinidad unfazed by rise in dengue
DESPITE reports of the continuous rise in the number of dengue cases, La Trinidad Mayor Nestor Fongwan said the Municipal Government is not alarmed, saying it is doing its best to save residents from being inflicted with the disease.
He said the town is not bothered by the number of dengue cases reported in the town as these are isolated compared to the number of the same cases recorded two years ago. "We are conducting intensive information campaign on how to prevent the disease," he said.
A village in the town was affected by an outbreak of the disease in 2004.
Benguet recorded the second most number of dengue cases from January to August 26 this year as reported earlier by the Department of Health (DOH).
The region recorded 276 cases of dengue in the province, second to Baguio City, which recorded 595 with one death.
The DOH central office declared Cordillera as one of the regions under a tight watch, following the increase in the number of dengue cases.
DOH Regional Director Amelita Pangilinan said there was a cyclical increase in dengue cases, adding that the highest was recorded in 2003.
She said he number of cases recorded this year was 66 percent higher than that of last year of 665. (JC)
