Tuba folks ask fair pay from Asin hydro plants
By Jane Cadalig

SOME Tuba residents are seeking just compensation for their properties that are crossed over by the pipelines owned by the City Government.

The city owns the hydro plants located in Barangays Tadiangan and Nangalisan, management of which is being negotiated with private companies.

Members of the Tadiangan-Nangalisan Hydro Landowners Association (TNHLA) laid down their proposals for an equitable compensation for being instrumental in the operations of the city-owned power plants.

The group, which is composed of more than 50 members, asked that it be accredited as a qualified bidder in any projects to be undertaken by the city regarding the operation of the hydro plants and that the members' children be among the priorities with regard any employment.

The provision of scholarships to deserving students, pavement of the roads leading to the main plants, provision of streetlights to the villages where the plants are located as well as computers/televisions for the elementary schools are also among the requests of the landowners' group.

Members also requested that the city pays rent for the use of their lots and that this be retroactive for at least the past 10 years.

The proposals are yet to be formally submitted to the City Government for consideration.

"We pray to the City Government to give us favor to uplift our lives and the community as a gesture of gratitude since we contribute to the operation of the hydro plants that generate millions. It is unfair that the city will put us aside again," the group said.

The city negotiated with the Hydro Electric Development Corporation (Hedcor) for the management of the hydro plants pending the completion of the terms of reference after the firm's contract with the Baguio Water District (BWD) lapsed last August 31. The BWD had said then it is no longer interested in the renewal of the contract.
